Natalya Pozdnysheva, Head of the Cash Operations Department of the Moscow Credit Bank (MCB), in an interview with PRIME, listed ways to identify counterfeit banknotes.

First of all, the expert advises to pay attention to the quality of the currency. “Ruble and dollar bills are made of cotton, and flax is also added to dollar bills, so they have a more fibrous base to the touch than ordinary paper,” Pozdnysheva said.

Then it is necessary to consider the security elements that are necessarily present on the banknotes of all countries. Some of them, according to the expert, can be checked with the naked eye.

For Bank of Russia banknotes, this is a watermark and a security tape, which, when viewed through the light, should always be continuous, even if only its fragments are visible on the surface of the banknote.

“Moiré stripes are also highly effective elements: when a banknote is tilted in a certain place, multi-colored rainbow stripes appear. You can also consider the kipp-effect: when examining the front side of the banknote in light falling at an angle, the letters “PP” or “Ꝑ” are determined in a horizontal strip under the main image, ”the expert added.

For US dollars, the ICD spokesperson continued, the security features are the watermark and security tape found on all bills except the 1 and 2 dollars issued since 1996.

“The portraits shown on the obverse of banknotes must be of high quality with the reproduction of halftones. Fragments made using OVI-color-variable paint are also a sign of authenticity, Pozdnysheva noted. – For example, the 2013 $ 100 banknote depicts a bell against the background of a copper inkwell, depending on the angle of illumination, it changes color from copper to green, as a result, it seems that the bell appears in the inkwell and disappears from it, while the picture and color of the bell do not change on counterfeit banknotes. “
