The shots would have been fired in pavilions 2 and 3 around 02:00, however, no deaths or injuries have been reported from this new episode of violence that was controlled by the uniformed with the use of tear gas.

Until the morning of this Thursday, a helicopter flew over the prison compound to rule out new riots or clashes between pavilions.

This Monday another violent act was reported in the Regional jail, located 500 meters from the Penitentiary. A prisoner was assassinated there, while several authorities were meeting with the press at the Penitentiary.

So far this year, 330 violent deaths have been reported in the national prison system, more than 200 have occurred in the Penitentiary, the prison with the largest prison population in the country, with about 8,000 inmates distributed in 12 pavilions and a Center for Provisional Detention (CDP), where they are detained for transit or alimony.

Government will not renew the state of exception in prisons

The Vice Minister of Government, Max Campos, He confirmed that there will be no renewal of the state of exception, but that despite that the National Police and the Armed Forces will remain in prisons according to their powers.

The state of exception that ended on Tuesday 28 was the first renewal of the one declared on September 29 due to “serious internal commotion in all the detention centers that make up the social rehabilitation system at the national level, without any exception (… ), based on the circumstances that have seriously affected the rights of persons deprived of liberty, the personnel of the prison security corps and members of the National Police, especially their rights to personal integrity and life ”.

Of the latest murders, last week, President Lasso pointed out that those responsible cannot be identified because there was no “prison intelligence” system and that they are already creating it together with the SNAI.

Lasso also reported that the government must hire 2,600 prison guides, since there are only 1,400 and 4,000 are needed.

Another action that the Government has taken to stop violence in prisons is the creation of a commission for dialogue and pacification of the country’s prison system, which has already met with gang leaders to promote an agreement between them to stop the confrontations. and deaths. (I)
