Estonian President Karis: The transition to a single state language of instruction does not mean the closure of Russian-language schools

Estonian President Alar Karis believes that even after the transition to a single state language of instruction in the country, there will be a place for Russian-language schools. He announced this to the ETV + TV channel, comparing Russian-language schools with those where teaching is conducted in English or French.

At the same time, the head of state believes that the republic should move towards the transition to an Estonian-language education from a very early age – from kindergartens, where the learning of the Estonian language occurs naturally. Today, this is hindered by a shortage of teachers, who cannot be prepared for super-short deadlines, and this applies to both Russian-language schools and secondary education as such.

Today, there are 74 Russian-language schools in Estonia, in which about 20% of the country’s schoolchildren study. On December 3, the Estonian Ministry of Education and Science presented a plan for the complete transfer of school education to Estonian by 2035, but it has not yet been agreed upon by the republic’s ruling coalition.
