Ukraine has suspended the development of its own vaccine against COVID-19. The reasons are the lack of funds and the indifference of the federal authorities.
This was announced to reporters by the head of the Institute of Cell Biology of the National Academy of Sciences, academician Andrei Sibirny, who is quoted by the portal “Suspilny”.
According to the scientist, the vaccine has successfully passed the first stage of testing in experimental mice. But the next stage of testing the vaccine in Polish laboratories (necessary due to the lack of such laboratories in Ukraine) was never carried out due to the fact that the National Research Foundation of Ukraine did not transfer the funds necessary for this.
The next phase of testing should be to test the vaccine in gophers and primates. This requires drugs with a total cost of 300-500 million euros, but neither the National Research Foundation nor the Ukrainian Ministry of Health is ready to pay for this.
Academician Sibirny suggests that the lack of interest from the authorities is associated with foreign vaccines that are already being used in Ukraine. In addition, a few days ago, it was announced the launch of a filling line for the ready-made Chinese vaccine CoronaVac.
