Restrictions, such as the current ones due to COVID-19, often encourage creativity. This is how José Jimbo, a Cuenca artisan who invented the mini-monigotes, reflects in his proposal, some small dolls to burn this December 31st and thus preserve the Ecuadorian tradition of the old year. His family works together and they all support each other in this initiative.
José has had a place in the Municipal Center of Crafts (Cemuart) for more than ten years. One of her specialties is the cloth dolls of the Cuencan chola, but from the beginning of the pandemic she undertook a new project. As health restrictions due to COVID-19 prevent people from crowding, he thought about how to maintain his business and at the same time the tradition of the last day of the year.
His first creation was a 25-centimeter stick figure ready to be lit. It is made of cloth and paper, so it does not need any type of fuel to stimulate burning. It is accompanied by a small will, a paper to write good wishes, an aluminum tray to avoid staining the floor and matches.
Municipalities maintain different measures on meetings and burning of puppets for the end of the year
He confesses that he had a good reception and for this 2021 not only that he kept them, but he created others, bigger and with some innovations. For example, the one that was released this month measures 18 inches, has a cardboard mask and comes with an additional gift, the set of lights known as “meteor shower”. The price of the first is $ 8 and the second $ 12 (45 cm), although if the customer has two or more, there is a discount.
They do not represent a particular character, but rather are generic for each person’s imagination to determine.
National COE reiterated that the burning of puppets at the end of the year can be done with a close family circle
The audience they want to reach are office workers who can burn the mini-monigote in a small space, but also families with few members who, due to health biosecurity issues, will stay at home this December 31.
With this they seek that the norms of the national COE are respected, to avoid that there are many people in the same place due to the burning of the puppet.
The premises of José Jimbo and his family are located in the Cemuart, located on General Torres and Sucre streets, in front of the Plaza de San Francisco. On Facebook you can find it as Hua-Si Artesanías Cuencanas. (I)
