The famous Zenit midfielder Stanislav Zavidonov died in St. Petersburg at the age of 88. His death was announced by the press service of the football club.
Stanislav Zavidonov was born in the city of Kansk, and ended up at Zenit at the beginning of 1957, after having successfully played in the top division for the Leningrad Trudovye Reservy for several years. After joining the football club, he immediately became one of the team leaders.
Since 1959, Zavidonov was regularly called up to the Olympic team of the Soviet Union.
“Soon, in one of the matches, Stanislav had to take care of Pele himself. Zenit successfully coped with the neutralization of the king of football. However, Zavidonov was more a creator than a destroyer. This is evidenced by the number of goals scored in the championship – 31, and in one of the cup matches the midfielder scored a hat-trick, ”the football club recalled.
In 1962, the footballer was recognized as the country’s strongest central midfielder. Five years after the end of his career, Zavidonov worked as a coach, was the head and then vice-president of FC Zenit.
