In 10 days it will be known if suspected cases of the omicron variant in Manabí are positive or discarded

In Santo Domingo, health officials walk the streets to identify people who have not yet been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Portoviejo

At a Christmas dinner and even probable infections after contact with people who came from abroad to Manabí. These hypotheses are considered by the four people who are currently suspected of the omicron variant in Manabí. This will be confirmed or discarded when the results are available, which would be in ten days.

Jessica Barrezueta, zonal director of public health surveillance of the zonal coordination 4 of the Ministry of Health, indicated that the four people, three residents in Portoviejo and one in Calceta, Bolívar cantonal capital, are genotyped to know the final score.

They are stable, vaccinated, isolated, within an epidemiological fence and the people with whom they had contact are followed.

In one of the suspected cases, according to Barrezueta, the index case has not yet been identified, but he pointed out that one probability would be a community contagion since that person was known to have shared a Christmas dinner in a public place in Portoviejo.

“The increase in infections itself is worrying, because although we realize after all these parties the suspected cases have increased, if the cases of omicron were confirmed, the transmission speed would be even higher and we will have a higher number of cases ”, declared Barrezueta.

Santo Domingo COE declares cantonal alert to significant increase in COVID-19 cases

In Manabí, for approximately two months, all the 21 beds enabled for COVID-19 patients, in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) area, have been fully filled.

The curve is high and does not decrease, indicated the health official, and even in recent days in the province there has been a greater demand for samples to confirm or rule out whether they are carriers of the virus.

“We even have infections in public and private institutions, where a partner comes out positive and obviously as they have shared in novenas, at Christmas dinners or in direct contacts without masks, they have increased that contagion,” said Barrezueta.

Until October, in Manabí there was a weekly report of 80 infections, but in the previous week a confirmation level of 300 cases was reported. The level of deaths is low, the previous week six deaths were reported in the provinces of Manabí and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas.

“The one that predominates and is communal is the delta variant, that is the variant that is causing us even hospital admissions. (There are also) alpha, gamma, which are known to be identified variants, they are not of serious concern; The delta variant, which we do have in the community, is of concern, ”said Barrezueta.
