“Consciousness poisoned by dictatorship”: lawyer Lukyanova commented on the possibility of the return of the death penalty in Russia

It is unacceptable to change one’s own values - earlier in the Constitutional Court they spoke about the impossibility of lifting the moratorium on the death penalty. This opinion was expressed in an interview with a Rosbalt correspondent by a lawyer, Doctor of Law Elena Lukyanova, commenting on the statement of the Chairman of the Constitutional Court Valery Zorkin about the possibility of returning the death penalty in Russia.

“I do not want to comment on the words of mentally ill people. Human life is priceless, and the state has no right to take it away. If the chairman of the Constitutional Court is already talking about this, then we are returning to the repressions of 1937, ”the expert said harshly.

Lukyanova also appreciated Zorkin’s remark that the introduction of the moratorium was a concession to values that are not characteristic of the Russian national legal consciousness:

“What-what values are not peculiar to us? The value of human life? “

When asked by a reporter whether the prospect of lifting the moratorium is real, Lukyanova succinctly answered: “Everything is real with them.”

“Let’s go back to the ‘triple courts’ and executions. This is a consciousness poisoned by the dictatorship, ”the expert summed up.

We will remind, earlier the head of the Constitutional Court admitted the possibility of the return of the death penalty in Russia. “As long as there are premeditated killings, the question of the use of the death penalty cannot be closed,” Zorkin says in his book “Constitutional Justice: Procedure and Meaning,” published on the court’s website.

The moratorium on capital punishment arose in 1997, when Russia joined the Council of Europe and signed a protocol to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights on the abolition of death sentences in peacetime. In 1999 and 2006, the Constitutional Court, by its decisions, confirmed this moratorium.
