The Cuenca-Molleturo-El Empalme highway, which connects Azuay with Guayas, was reopened as of today. The controlled vehicle circulation schedule will be from 05:00 to 18:30. The Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP) offered to have an alternative route ready for the carnival holiday of 2022.
The opening of this road occurs after two months of being closed by a provision of the MTOP, which adduced issues of landslides and rocks, especially at kilometer 49.
The MTOP undersecretary, Luis Barsallo, commented that in order to enforce the decision, the agents of the Ecuadorian Transit Commission (CTE) were ordered to locate themselves in three sectors: the “Y” of Sayausí, Jesús María and kilometer 49. He clarified that, in the event of a possible landslide, the road will close again.
The rest of the time, citizens who wish to travel between the two provinces must use the Cuenca-Zhud-Cochancay route.
This decision was made in a meeting between authorities and the inhabitants of Molleturo that took place on Monday morning and afternoon.
Édison Mallaguari, spokesman for the inhabitants, assured that this decision is positive and the result of the social pressure exerted by them, particularly the sit-in held last Thursday in Cuenca, where they took over the center with protests, slogans and even exhibiting the truck that was damaged by falling rocks.
With a medium-term perspective, Barsallo explained that from next Tuesday they will begin work on an alternate 2.2-kilometer road that will be parallel to the Migüir river. They offered to have it ready for the carnival holiday, which will be between February 28 and March 1 of next year.
It was also said that to support the local economy when the jobs start unskilled labor and food will be provided by people from the sector. (I)
