The deterioration in relations between Russia and NATO began earlier than 2014. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Alexander Fomin.
“After the end of the Cold War, the Russian Federation has repeatedly made attempts to find new forms of interaction with NATO, to create a stable, equal system of European security for all. It would be wrong to believe that the deterioration in Russia-NATO relations began in 2014, ”TASS quoted him as saying.
In his opinion, the “deplorable” state of relations between Russia and NATO can be explained by the fact that the alliance allegedly resorted to using “hybrid methods to contain Russia, combining dialogue with an increase in military preparations.”
Fomin added that in recent years, the emphasis has been on military deterrence, and before that more attention was paid to cooperation projects of interest to the alliance.
In his opinion, NATO is preparing for a large-scale armed conflict with Russia.
Earlier, we will remind, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed the opinion that the actions of the Russian Federation regarding NATO will depend not on the progress of negotiations on guarantees, but on the basis of the requirements of the unconditional security of the Russian Federation today and in the future. He added that Russia was “cheated, blatantly deceived” when in the 1990s they promised not to push NATO eastward. One gets the impression that even after the collapse of the USSR, the West “considers the Russian Federation too big,” the head of state added. Now it is the West that “immediately” must provide security guarantees for Russia, and not vice versa, Putin concluded.
And if the US and NATO refuse to give such guarantees, Moscow’s response may be very different, he added.
According to media reports, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg decided to hold the NATO-Russia Council on January 12. On this day, a meeting of the chiefs of the General Staff of the countries of the alliance is planned to be held in Brussels.
