Daily Mail: The tradition of giving gifts for the New Year will save you from depression and stroke

The good old tradition of giving presents for Christmas and New Years can literally save you from heart problems. This is the conclusion reached by US cardiologists, which the Daily Mail, one of the most popular British newspapers, tells about.

The University of California researchers conducted a study involving more than 90 students. Young people were asked to give speeches in front of a large audience without preparation, which became a prerequisite for “triggering” stress. Then half of the participants in the experiment were given free gift cards that they could give to anyone. Subsequent blood pressure and heart rate measurements showed that the students who acted as donors felt better than their peers who received the gifts.

In addition, as the experimenters emphasize, generous people who like to give gifts are less at risk of depression, heart attacks, and stroke.
“We spend most of our daily life earning money to take care of ourselves and our family, and this makes us ruthless towards other people,” says psychologist Carey Cooper. “Giving New Year’s gifts is a good opportunity to compensate for behaviors that are beneficial to health.”
