In the last five weeks, infections increased
Alfredo Olmedo, coordinator of strategies and brigades of the Ministry of Health, recalls that the intervention with the brigades began on July 22, 2020. Until December 2021, 109,000 antigen tests have been carried out, he points out; of that total, more than 22% have tested positive.
The coordinator clarifies that, for a correct interpretation of the current situation of the pandemic, the analysis must take the last two weeks of testing as a reference. In that sense, it indicates that in the past two weeks the level of positivity reached 10%.
“This has been increasing. Although it is not a highly worrisome positivity, it is striking that it is increasing. To say that an epidemic is controlled, according to the indications of the WHO (World Health Organization), the positivity of an event must be less than 5%. In this case, we have 10%, which has increased from the last five weeks. Before that, we had a positivity of 2 to 3% ”, describes Olmedo.
In Ecuador, the omicron variant of COVID-19 is already community, according to the Ministry of Public Health (MSP)
The coordinator of the Ministry of Health attributes this growth to the behavior of the people, the holidays in the last quarter of the year, as well as the presence of the new omicron variant, which is highly transmissible.
From December 13 to 27, municipal medical personnel carried out 807 tests, of which 109 were positive.
Olmedo highlights that the health brigades have 230 people who are distributed in different parts of the city, which are chosen based on epidemiological reports and hospitals.
Medical personnel also travel the neighborhoods, from house to house, when they receive reports of hospitalized patients in serious condition. Likewise, communities are intervened with the help of neighborhood leaders. In the homes, an evaluation of the people, antigen tests and vaccination are carried out.
