Two more participants in the attack by the Basayev and Khattab gang on servicemen in Dagestan were arrested in 1999. This was reported by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.
“Investigators, together with employees of the Federal Security Service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia and with the military support of the Russian Guard, detained two natives of the Stavropol Territory – Kairbek Bakiev and Ilkhan Kanmurzaev. At the request of the investigation, the court has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention for Bakiev, ”the report says.
It was established that in mid-July 1999 the defendants joined the gang under the general leadership of Shamil Basayev and Emir Khattab. From August 7 to August 24, 1999, at least 1,000 militants took part in an armed rebellion in order to overthrow the constitutional order and violate the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation. They attacked the servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, ensuring security and establishing constitutional order in the Botlikh region of Dagestan. As a result of massive targeted shelling by the gang, 33 people were killed, 34 more were injured.
