The heavy rains caused a landslide on the Loja-Chuquiribamba road and until Monday morning the community was looking for a missing person as a result of the disaster. Three more died from the landslide.

On the night of Thursday, December 23, due to heavy rains, a landslide occurred on the Loja-Chuquiribamba road, Naranjito sector. The rising of a ravine dragged four people who were on the road in the middle of the night; two of them allegedly got off the bus to walk across the landslide and the other two victims were residents of the place who came to help.

The calls that entered the local operating center ECU911 Loja reported that a landslide occurred due to the overflow of a stream in the sector.
“The bus (of passengers) manages to pass and the lady (in a small vehicle) who came to see the daughter in Aguangora stays and no longer passes,” said Yolanda Uchuari, a resident of the sector.
“The cry to get out, get out, was heard, but when they agreed, a man got lost (he was dragged away) and another man advanced to hold a child and was saved,” said another inhabitant.
Rescue personnel from the Fire Department, uniforms from the National Police, the Ministry of Public Health, officials from the National Risk and Emergency Management Service and the support of machinery from the Municipality of Loja and Vialsur of the Prefecture were mobilized to attend the emergency.
The victims were identified as Cristian S., 20, Gloria Y., 47, and José G., 74.
