The Armed Forces will continue to support the Police in controlling access to prisons in Ecuador, which are in a state of exception, the Government announced this Sunday.

“The Armed Forces will continue to provide security in the outer perimeter of the detention centers,” the Ministry of Government said in a statement.

The resolution was adopted by the so-called Sectorial Security Cabinet, headed by the Minister of the Interior, Alexandra Vela, where the situation of the Social Rehabilitation System and “the measures against the culmination of the state of exception, on December 28, ”L.

In addition, the military _which are constitutionally prohibited from operating inside prisons_ “will participate in operations to control the possession and possession of firearms, ammunition and explosives, in accordance with the law.”

The government of Guillermo Lasso maintains a state of exception to mobilize the Police and Armed Forces “in order to maintain order in prisons,” where more than 300 inmates have died in riots so far this year.

For this reason, patrols will intensify on access roads to the country’s prisons and inside the centers “the reaction forces will be maintained for immediate action.”

Lasso decreed the exception for 60 days on September 29 (he renewed it for 30 more on November 29) after one of the worst prison massacres in Latin America in which 119 inmates of the Penitentiary died. (I)
