NASA launched the James Webb telescope into space

The Ariane 5 rocket with the James Webb Space Telescope has been launched from the Kourou Cosmodrome in French Guiana.

Now the telescope has to cover 1.5 million km before it reaches its target at the Lagrange point L₂ of the Sun-Earth system and unfolds a mirror to scan the Universe in optical and infrared ranges, 3DNews reports.

After James Webb achieves its goal, NASA engineers will test its systems and equipment for several months to make sure they are working. It is expected that the first images “James Webb” will transmit to Earth next summer.

The design of the device began in 1996, and the launch of the James Webb was originally supposed to take place between 2007 and 2011. However, the start was repeatedly postponed, the development became more expensive, and at some point, American lawmakers even thought to stop funding the project. By the time of launch, the total cost of the project was $ 9.7 billion.
