Russian court fined Facebook about 2 billion rubles

The Magistrates’ Court in the Tagansky District of Moscow has appointed Meta Platforms Inc (formerly Facebook) a turnover fine of 1.99 billion rubles. Earlier it was reported that Google LLC also received a fine of 7.22 billion rubles for a repeated violation under the Code of Administrative Offenses “Violation of the procedure for restricting access to information, access to which is subject to restriction.”

According to Roskomnadzor, in respect of Facebook Inc and Google LLC on October 4 and 27, respectively, Roskomnadzor drew up administrative protocols under Part 5 of Art. 13.41 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation for failure to delete materials recognized by the court and authorized state authorities as prohibited for distribution on the territory of the Russian Federation.

According to RKN, the companies ignored the numerous requirements of Roskomnadzor in relation to materials that offend the feelings of believers, inciting ethnic and inter-confessional conflicts, propaganda of extremism and terrorism, fake information, information about “catching”, “roofing” and deliberate asphyxiation, as well as instructions for making explosives.

Roskomnadzor reported that more than 2 thousand materials on Facebook and Instagram and more than 4 thousand materials on Google remain unremoved.
