The historic center is the most conflictive sector due to traffic congestion and the presence of people looking to buy at BBB stores.
Faced with the massive movement of customers in December, regarding the Christmas and end of the year festivities, the Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT) of Quito will deploy agents to control the traffic flow in the surroundings of 17 shopping centers and areas with high traffic. Two operations will be carried out: the first began on December 10 and ends on December 26; the second will be from December 30 to January 2, 2022.
The most conflictive sector for transit, since the month started, has been the historic center, because many people come from 06:00 to buy in the savings malls, also known as BBB (good, beautiful and cheap), explains Verónica Mancero, head of the Central Zone operations unit of the AMT.
“We have had a large influx of vehicles and pedestrians (in the historical center). Similarly, Zona Azul parking lots are being implemented in the San Roque and El Tejar sectors, in order to improve mobility. The brigades designated by the AMT are responsible to collaborate with the safety of pedestrians, as well as guaranteeing fluidity for drivers ”, says Mancero.
In the north and south of the capital, where there are large establishments, also there are difficulties to move, because of the traffic. In this places circulation is especially difficult in the afternoon.
“We maintain the constant presence of personnel in each of the 17 shopping centers, from opening hours to the end of activities,” Mancero describes. Depending on each establishment, agents have worked until 00:00, when special discount nights have been developed for credit cards, it indicates.
Additionally, the AMT has also reinforced the supervision of the entrance and exit roads of Quito, as are the avenues Mariscal Sucre, Simón Bolívar, Maldonado, Panamericana Norte, Interoceánica, Ruta Viva and the General Rumiñahui highway.
As for the informal sales that are placed outside the commercial premises, surveillance falls on the Metropolitan Control Agency (AMC).
recommendations
Mancero suggests to the citizens get around in public transport, especially to access the historic center.
If you drive, it is recommended driving “defensively” and avoid the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Parking the car in permitted places, so as not to be penalized, since the fine is 10% of a basic salary, according to the Comprehensive Organic Criminal Code (COIP), highlights the head of the operations unit.
In addition, the permanent use of the mask, even inside the car, and compliance with biosecurity measures: frequent hand washing, use of alcohol and keeping your distance. (I)
