Relatives, colleagues and friends of Zoila Modesta Flor Medranda de Chancay remembered this Tuesday her centenary of birth, precisely in the city where she was born, Santa Ana, where her relatives who resided in several cities in Ecuador traveled.

The emotional tribute was conceived by his relatives and was held at the entrance to the Santa Ana Municipality building, where a bust is raised in honor of Medranda, who in 1978, during the military dictatorship in Ecuador, became the first woman in presiding over the National Union of Educators (UNE) at the country level.

Sandra Chancay, daughter of Medranda, appreciated the tribute they paid to her mother, the exaltations made by several of her colleagues and even the interaction by telematic means of descendants of the teacher, who was born on December 21, 1921 in the community of Peminche of the Santa Ana canton.

“She was detained, in her words it was admired why she, who defended the rights of children, of teachers, was taken into custody when people who offended the country and education walked unpunished now and before,” said Sandra .

Santa Ana celebrates 120 years and preserves its traditions

Flor Chancay Medranda, another of the daughters of the remembered teacher, said that her family and Santa Ana are proud of the fight that her mother led in an uncompromising way so that at that time the legalization of the UNE was reestablished.

“She organized field trips with the school children. When she was the director of the Rafael María Mendoza school in Portoviejo, she organized trips to take the children to see Quito, they would come home and give them breakfast, and they would go out to see the city, ”said Flor Chancay.

Several entities such as the UNE of Manabí and the Municipality of Santa Ana left offerings on the bust of Flor Medranda, and even the council of this Manabi canton delivered a commemorative plaque to the centenary of the birth of this woman, who died and was buried in Quito in June 1986. (I)
