One patient infected with the omicron strain can infect more than six people, which exceeds the same figure for carriers of the “delta”, said corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, virologist Sergei Netesov.
As reported by “Lenta.ru”, the specialist emphasized that the “reproductive number” – the number of potential infections by each carrier – has not yet been determined precisely, but it can be assumed that it will be “more than that of the” delta “option.” Thus, according to Netesov, “it is already clear that this option will spread no less quickly than the delta.”
At the same time, the virologist emphasized that the data that scientists have at their disposal do not yet allow us to accurately predict the dynamics of the spread of the omicron, therefore “we must take the ‘delta’ as an analogue and look at it already”. However, in his opinion, the recently published data on the outbreak in Norway and the expected data for Britain and Denmark “can help at least a rough estimate.”
We will remind, earlier it was reported that studies of scientists from Russia and South Africa confirmed the higher infectivity of “omicron” in comparison with other strains of coronavirus.
