Petr Biryukov: Reservoirs supplying Moscow with water have been switched to winter operation

The reservoirs supplying Moscow with water have been switched to winter operation, said the deputy mayor of Moscow in the Moscow government, Pyotr Biryukov.

“A stable snow cover has formed on the catchment area in the Moscow, Smolensk and Tver regions,” noted Pyotr Biryukov. “In this regard, 15 reservoirs of the Moskvoretskaya and Volzhskaya water systems, which provide the capital with water, have been switched to winter operation.”

The deputy mayor said that in order to successfully pass the flood next spring, the employees of the hydraulic structures increased the drawdown of reservoirs to create additional free capacity.

“This will allow receiving all melt water from the catchment areas, the total area of which is 50 thousand square meters. kilometers, to exclude flooding of non-floodplain areas, – explained Pyotr Biryukov. “At present, the operation of hydraulic structures guarantees a balanced inflow and consumption of the resource, providing reliable water supply to the capital region.”

The head of the Municipal Economy Complex said that in winter, the employees of the hydroelectric facilities regularly carry out snow-measuring surveys, which makes it possible to predict the scale of future floods and adjust the work of structures.
