German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock have come to a compromise in connection with Nord Stream 2.
According to Die Zeit, Berbock indicated that she still disagreed with the State Chancellor on this issue. However, both of them now believe that “the certification process should take place on the basis of European legislation.”
The minister also noted that energy resources “cannot be used as a weapon to destabilize Europe.”
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Germany, Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection of the country Robert Habek considered the Nord Stream-2 project a geopolitical mistake in Germany. He pointed out that all European countries, except Germany and Austria, have always opposed him.
Initially, the pipeline was planned to be completed at the end of 2019, but the process was hampered by US sanctions. On November 8, the deputy head of the Gazprom department, Aleksey Finikov, announced that construction was completed and Nord Stream 2 was ready to launch.
Meanwhile, to start deliveries, Nord Stream 2 AG must be certified as a pipeline operator. This procedure consists of two stages: first, the German regulator will develop a draft decision, then the European Commission will evaluate it.
