Lavrov: We do not want to go down the path of strangling the media

The Russian authorities do not want to “follow the path of stifling the press, stifling the media, as our Western partners are doing.” So Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov commented on the refusal to broadcast the RT DE channel in Germany. At the same time, Lavrov did not rule out that Russia would be forced to take retaliatory measures.

In a commentary on RT, he said that in the Zapadna, there has been “discrimination” against the Russian media for many years. “We were often tempted to respond in a mirror, reciprocating, but until recently, the conviction that we did not want to predominate was still prevalent,” the Foreign Minister noted.

And he added that “there is a limit to all patience.” “I do not rule out that if this unacceptable situation continues, we will have to answer,” Lavrov concluded.

As a reminder, the German-language media regulator MABB removed RT DE from broadcasting in Europe. The press service of the TV channel called the actions of the regulator illegal and stated that they “violate the European Convention on Transfrontier Television (ECTT)”. The TV channel intends to seek judicial review of the decision.

On December 16, it became known that YouTube blocked the RT DE channel. This happened on the day of the launch of the German-language television broadcast. The reasons for the blocking were not specified. On September 28, YouTube deleted two German RT channels permanently.

The chairman of the Union of Journalists of Russia (UJR), Vladimir Soloviev, called the withdrawal from the broadcast of the RT DE channel in Europe as a manifestation of censorship. “The situation with RT DE is an open manifestation of censorship, violation of freedom of speech and freedom of dissemination of information,” he told TASS. – On the part of the UJR there will be appeals to the International Federation of Journalists, human rights organizations. I hope they will support us. And they will influence the German authorities. ” Soloviev drew attention to the fact that the Deutsche Welle TV channel and other media outlets operate freely in the Russian information space.
