State Duma introduces punishment for reckless drivers on the roads

The State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill that toughens punishment for violation of traffic safety rules, a Rosbalt correspondent reports.

The bill proposes to supplement the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation with a new article 264.2, which establishes responsibility for committing certain violations of traffic rules expressed in exceeding the established speed of a vehicle by more than 60 km / h or more than 80 km / h, or when leaving on the lane of oncoming traffic or tram tracks of the opposite direction in cases where such a violation is committed by a person who has already been subjected to administrative punishment and has been deprived of his driver’s license for repeated offenses.

As the maximum punishment, it is proposed to provide for imprisonment for up to two years with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years.

More than 40% of drivers are not stopped by the fact that they are brought to administrative responsibility for speeding and they repeatedly violate traffic rules. Almost 10% of drivers grossly violate the rules by repeatedly driving into the oncoming lane, according to the explanatory note to the project.
