The likelihood of death from the new omicron coronavirus strain, as well as its timing, depend on the individual characteristics of a particular person. This was reported to “Vechernyaya Moskva” by a doctor-immunologist Vladislav Zhemchugov.
According to him, patients tolerate omicron more easily than delta, but a lethal outcome is also possible and depends on the presence of concomitant diseases. The doctor of medical sciences recalled that the omicron has 37 mutations.
“As for the period of death from the new strain, I am aware of only one case of death that has occurred in the UK. But in general, according to various sources, the period of mortality from the omicron does not differ much from its predecessor – it is from two weeks to a month, ”explained Zhemchugov.
The specialist noted that after infection with omicron and in the presence of concomitant diseases, a bacterial infection may develop, which will not only increase the risk of death, but also accelerate it.
Earlier, Vladislav Zhemchugov suggested that in the long term, the coronavirus could find a new “host” among animals, disappear completely or remain with a person forever.
