Eduard Babariko, the son of the candidate for the post of Belarus Viktor Babariko, who is now in one of the Minsk jail on charges of tax evasion, faces a new charge – this time of organizing riots and inciting social hostility. This is announced by the Telegram channel of the press service of Viktor Babariko himself, who is also now in captivity. According to the Criminal Code of Belarus, Babariko Jr., accused of one of the most serious crimes, can face up to 20 years in prison.
Law enforcement agencies of Belarus have not yet commented on this news.
Viktor Babariko, the former chairman of the board of Belgazprombank and the leader of the unregistered Razam party, was detained on June 18, 2020. Accused of receiving a bribe on an especially large scale by an organized group and of legalizing funds obtained by criminal means, Babariko Sr. was sentenced to 14 years in prison. His detention and refusal to participate in the elections sparked massive protests, and the human rights organization Amnesty International recognized Viktor and Eduard Babariko, as well as a number of other political opponents of Alexander Lukashenko, prisoners of conscience.
