Global warming may lead to an increase in the frequency of extreme natural events in Russia. Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, warned about this in an interview with Parlamentskaya Gazeta.
He pointed out that “the average rate of global warming is 0.17 degrees Celsius over 10 years.” “And in Russia – 0.45 degrees over 10 years – 2.5 times higher. This is due to the fact that our country is continental and is located in temperate and high latitudes. In latitudinal zones dominated by continents, global warming is most pronounced. This applies not only to Eurasia, but also to North America. There are exactly the same numbers. Continents do not absorb CO2, the main greenhouse gas. But in latitudes where the ocean prevails – and it just absorbs carbon dioxide – the effect of global warming is not so strong, ”the expert noted.
According to him, warming at such a rate will lead to the fact that “in the south of the European territory of our country, the climate will become more and more arid, precipitation will fall less and less.”
“In the north, on the contrary, there will be more precipitation. In addition, an increase in extreme natural phenomena awaits us. This is especially true of heat waves in summer. According to Roshydromet, the number of dangerous phenomena has doubled over the last quarter of a century. In addition, you need to understand that the permafrost will no longer be eternal. And if its melting begins, this can lead to the most unpleasant consequences. Melting permafrost threatens the stability of buildings and structures located in this zone, ”said Wilfand.
We also remind that earlier he predicted that this winter in almost all regions the weather is expected to be heterogeneous, but the most “heterogeneous” winter will be in the center of the European part of Russia.
According to the meteorologist, in winter there will be many thaws and episodes with cold weather – below minus 20 degrees. “This is a really serious problem – episodes like this. We have already forgotten about this, ”the expert said.
At the same time, about 10-11 thaws per season are forecasted in Moscow.
