Illuminated figures arranged in parks and squares in Ambato enliven the Christmas spirit

The inhabitants and tourists visit these spaces at night to take pictures together with the allegories.

Nativity scenes with images of the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph and the Child Jesus, as well as a variety of decorations alluding to the Christmas season, illuminate various sectors of Ambato. Attracted by these ornaments, many people come as a family at night in order to capture photographs of themselves with these allegories.

Pablo Lara and Mayra López were together with their families taking pictures of the trees, nativity scenes and other decorations that the Municipality of Ambato placed in the Civic Square, in Huachi Chico.

They agreed that on this occasion, unlike in previous years, the Christmas allegories placed are more illuminated and that this is what attracts people and enlivens the Christmas season, despite what is experienced by the COVID-19 pandemic .

At the site, the mayor of Ambato, Javier Altamirano, lit the tree with the slogan “This Christmas, life is the best gift.” It is a tree over fifteen meters high, as well as eighteen smaller ones, one for each rural parish in the canton.

Meanwhile, the Empresa Eléctrica Ambato Regional Centro Norte SA (EEASA) placed different illuminated Christmas motifs in different places of the city. According to Ángel Silva, head of the Public Lighting section, each year new allegories and the incorporation of new sites are sought.

He recalled that the lighting with Christmas motifs by the company began when the traditional elements were the incandescent colored spotlights and pergolas that were placed mainly on the trees in the parks, but that since 2015 the decorations are made with hose technology LED and with metallic structures covered with metallized paper.

He said that in Ambato the allegories were placed in the Montalvo and Cevallos parks, monuments of the First Printing House on the Santa Elena hill in Pinllo and of the second Constituent Square in La Merced, La Familia park, in the buildings of the government of Tungurahua and EEASA, in the clock sector, in the electric stands, by the Josefinos parents sector, as well as in bridges, avenues and streets of the city.

Silva highlighted the birth that was placed on the hill of Santa Elena, which is around 20 meters high by 30 wide, which for that reason can be seen from different sectors of the city.

He also said that they tried to see traditional elements of the city, that for that reason in the Cevallos park a jambato (amphibian that gave rise to the name of the first settlement of what is now Ambato) was placed with a Christmas hat.

Vanessa Demera precisely arrived together with her three daughters at Cevallos Park in order to begin the tour of the places where the illuminated Christmas motifs are located.

“It is very nice that, in addition to living the Christmas season with these decorations, something of our tradition is highlighted, such as the jambato,” he said. (I)
