Chief US infectious disease specialist Fauci prepares for omicron coronavirus dominance

The new omicron coronavirus strain will become dominant in the United States in the next few weeks, and residents of the country will face many cases of infections that “break through” the immune system. Chief American infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci told NBC about this.

He called for revaccination, hoping that if it does not protect against infection, it will provide a “very, very mild” course of the disease, RIA Novosti reports.

Meanwhile, it became known that the omicron had already become dominant in Ireland. Moreover, it took him only two weeks to do this, TASS notes.

And the World Health Organization (WHO) announced yesterday that omicron has already been found in 89 states.

Recall that the new strain of coronavirus B.1.1.529, which contains 32 mutations in the S-protein, was first identified in South Africa and Botswana in early November. The infected were found in Hong Kong, Belgium, Israel. At an emergency meeting on November 26, the World Health Organization recognized B.1.1.529 as “of concern” and named it “omicron” after the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet. Omicron has a large number of mutations, it also spreads faster than the delta type. A new strain of coronavirus with increased mobility has been found in more than 85 countries, including Russia.
