Former adviser to 43rd US President George W. Bush on Russia and Eurasia, managing director of the consulting company Kissinger Associates Thomas Graham assessed the likelihood of introducing “hellish sanctions” against Russia. His words are reported by Interfax.
According to the expert, the current US head Joe Biden will announce new measures against Russia only if Moscow attacks Kiev. In this regard, Graham called today’s reports of possible sanctions an attempt to contain Russia’s actions.
“I rule out the option when Biden would have decided on sanctions without an invasion from Moscow,” he stressed.
As Graham specified, the American president has repeatedly said that he does not want to escalate tension in relations with Russia.
“If you look at his policies since January this year, all of his sanctions actions were actually very soft,” he said. According to the expert, the measures that were introduced this spring related to interference in the internal affairs of the country and the elections – those problems that existed under the previous US presidents.
Graham added that Biden wants a stable and predictable relationship with Russia in order to focus on China.
