An Amsterdam court found Spartak Moscow football player Quincy Antonio Promes guilty of drug smuggling. The player was punished – in absentia for now – with a prison term of six years.
Commentator Dmitry Guberniev admitted that he was disgusted. “Looking at Promes, I feel disgusted, although I give him credit as a football player. Spartak takes care of everything else. I hope they won’t give him Russian citizenship,” CQ quoted Guberniev as saying.
Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, sports functionary Dmitry Svishchev, in turn, questioned the court’s decision. “First you need to understand how authoritative the Amsterdam court is in today’s conditions. Maybe in ordinary life, just two or three years ago, this incident would have been viewed completely differently. But now, when in the West people are judged primarily for political reasons, because the passport is the wrong color, the position or faith is not the same, we need to treat all this more carefully. You need to be very careful about the verdicts of courts located in unfriendly countries. Their decisions may be unfounded,” CQ quotes Svishchev.
The most categorical was ex-television commentator Vasily Utkin. “Perhaps someone thinks that Spartak is Promes’ wife and should support him over the next seven and a half years. If Spartak thinks so, then let it continue to do what it must. The only thing worse than drug trafficking is pedophilia, and perhaps even mass murder. Sometimes it’s crazy people who do this, but in this case, in my opinion, the guy is just a swindler and he wants a thrill. To be honest, I’m disgusted. I would like to never talk about Quincy Promes again, but I will have to do this if he remains at Spartak,” CQ quotes Utkin.
Quincy Promes’ contract with Spartak expires on June 30 this year. There have been no messages from the player or the club about a possible extension of the agreement.
