The more recharged, the better: Christmas is once again celebrated as before

The idea is that this year the Christmas celebrations are more beautiful than ever before, as if they were out of a fairy tale.

A nutcracker smiles from the living room ledge, a deer adorns the window. The red ornaments of the tree reflect the light of the candles, and next to them hang small red balls. Christmas plates, ruffles and lace decorate the table.

The image may refer to the living room of a European great-grandmother on Christmas Eve or it may seem the description of the most beautiful window of a department store during Advent. However, it is the trend in decoration for Christmas 2021.

Does this mean that Christmas is going to be celebrated again like the good old days? German trend expert Gabriela Kaiser, who analyzed the Advent products available in stores, says that the idea is that this year Christmas celebrations are more beautiful than ever before.

The goal is to recreate a Fantastic christmas similar to those in children’s story books. The more recharged, the better! Nostalgic, fantastic in the style of fairy tales is in fashion today.

It could be argued that Christmas decorations were always like this. But the fact that there is so much of this in all the different decorating styles is quite striking. According to trend analysts, this is for a number of reasons.

On the one hand, a very important one is that they are living times of uncertainty due to the pandemic, in which the elements associated with childhood unconsciously provide a feeling of well-being. “This souvenir has a comforting effect: it creates a feeling of comfort and confidence,” says German trend seeker Claudia Herke, who discusses what’s new for Christmasworld in Frankfurt.

A Christmas tree as if it came out of a fairy tale book

Many people repeat old family traditions or rediscover them in adulthood. This phenomenon is observed in many areas, such as in fashion or in the choice of furniture: the grandchildren again like what the grandmother liked.

However, the parent generation, which is in the middle of these two, can safely do without all these things. This means that young people begin to celebrate Christmas in a way that they themselves have never experienced before. “Or put another way, they had only witnessed that kind of Christmas by flipping through children’s books or watching old movies,” Kaiser says.

“In every good fairy tale, the classic Christmas tree is decorated with red baubles. And on the ground there is a wooden horse and a small steam train ”, exemplified. However, these are not the only fashion accent pieces that challenge the consumer on an emotional level.

Reasons related to nature such as leaves, nuts, twigs or pine cones they symbolize a “counterpoint to digital boredom,” says Herke. He adds that they represent the same kind of slowdown that a walk through a quiet forest can generate.

This also brings awareness to Advent and winter, a frigid time in many countries, when people spend comparatively little time outdoors. It is then time to bring nature home and make the home environment especially beautiful and welcoming.

Lush decorations

Added to this is another trend: many are now decorating their homes in a comparatively more opulent and elaborate way than a few years ago. Gabriela Kaiser uses the term “highly decorated” for this. One of the reasons for this, in his opinion, is that there is still a feeling that there is a lot to recover.

“Last year there were many restrictions during the Christmas season due to the pandemic. Many people were unable to celebrate together. So the last celebration was a bit reduced, ”he recalls. And there the circle closes: Christmas 2021 should be able to compensate and provide many things. Therefore, the idea is that the home looks as pleasant as possible. Like before. Or like in children’s books. Because it is what the heart needs right now. (I)
