Russia has refused to rename settlements with ambiguous names. The villages of Lokh, Shalava, Bukhalovo and others will remain in the country, as follows from a comment on the State Duma website.
Parliamentarians from the Committee on Regional Policy and Local Self-Government decided that the proposed regulations contradict current laws and withdrew the bill to rename locations that could be perceived as offensive to residents.
This initiative was submitted for consideration on October 19, 2023. The note to him noted that residents of a number of localities across the country are facing negative situations due to offensive names. Examples included the village of Shalava (Yaroslavl region), the village of Durkino (Kirov region), the village of Lokh (Saratov region) and Bukhalovo (several villages in the Yaroslavl, Tver and Arkhangelsk regions).
On November 27, the draft was considered in the first reading, but on February 12, the document was withdrawn.
Let us note that the head of the Popkovsky rural settlement, Alexey Ivakhnov, previously commented on the bill. In his opinion, the residents of Popok have a normal attitude towards the name, and no one is embarrassed by it.
