NATO’s Supreme Commander in Europe, US General Tod Walters, has proposed expanding the alliance’s presence in Bulgaria and Romania. According to TASS, Der Spiegel magazine writes that the general made such a proposal during a secret videoconference with the participation of representatives of the countries – partners in the alliance.
In response to a buildup of Russian troops near Ukraine’s borders, Walters called for an expanded NATO presence in Bulgaria and Romania as part of the Enhanced Forward Presence mission.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry published drafts of a bilateral agreement on security guarantees and an agreement on security measures for the Russian Federation and the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance transferred to the United States and expects that Washington will begin negotiations on them in the near future.
Under the agreement, the United States must undertake obligations to exclude further expansion of NATO in the eastern direction, to refuse to admit the former republics of the USSR, and now independent states, into the alliance. Russia proposes to return to the previous format of interaction within the Russia-NATO Council, restore communication channels and stop considering each other as adversaries.
The United States and Russia are also invited to abandon any military activity on the territory of Ukraine, as well as other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia.
