The All-Russian Society of the Deaf answered Elon Musk’s question about gesture duplication

Elon Musk on social networks X (banned in the Russian Federation) asked the question: “Why do they dub in sign language on TV, because there are subtitles for this?” The head of the Media Group of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf, Nikolai Shmelev, gave an explanation to Elon Musk.

Subtitles are a universal form for perceiving information. People with hearing loss may have difficulty understanding subtitles. When teaching and raising children with this health condition, it is not always possible to fully develop reading skills. Therefore, sign language comes to the rescue. The expert told ridus.ru about this.

Russian Sign Language (RSL) has its own grammar and vocabulary. Sign language is an alternative to speech. For people with hearing impairments, it is not only necessary to perceive text, but communication is also important.

Another type of sign speech is tracing sign speech. It complements oral speech and is organized according to its rules. In deaf people who have insufficient vocabulary, as a rule, RSL predominates. It is more convenient for them to perceive information this way. At the same time, not all people with hearing impairment speak sign language.

In the Russian Federation there are difficulties associated with the insufficient level of subtitling preparation. In automatic mode, subtitles do not always display information correctly.

The All-Russian Society of the Deaf pays great attention to the development of sign language. It is especially important to teach children with hearing impairments to use sign language.
