Peskov: Rainbows are not prohibited by law in Russia

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that there is no ban on rainbows in Russia, RIA Novosti reports. This is how a Kremlin representative commented on the case of Nizhny Novgorod resident Anastasia Ershova, who was arrested in early February for earrings in rainbow colors.

According to Peskov, the Kremlin does not know “all the details” of what happened, but in the Russian Federation there is no legislation according to which rainbows or rainbow colors would be prohibited.

Earlier, State Duma deputy Alexander Khinshtein criticized Ershova’s punishment. According to the deputy, the sentence should be reconsidered and overturned. In turn, State Duma Deputy Speaker Vladislav Davankov demanded that the Supreme Court clarify which specific symbols constitute extremism and which do not constitute a violation of the law.

Let us remind you that Nizhny Novgorod resident Anastasia Ershova was called by employees of Center “E” after the girl appeared in one of the city cafes wearing earrings with a rainbow. On February 1, Ershova was arrested for five days under Part 1 of Art. 20.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (demonstration of extremist symbols) for the allegedly discovered connection of jewelry with the LGBT movement (The “International LGBT Social Movement” is recognized as extremist in Russia and is banned). However, the court did not name specific symbols in the image of the girl that could be in any way connected with LGBT people.
