German Chancellor Olaf Scholz should have met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and negotiated with him. This was stated by the former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany and the current Ukrainian ambassador to Brazil Andriy Melnik, reports the German channel N-TV.
“Why doesn’t Mr. Scholz meet with Putin? <…> And during the Cold War there were meetings,” Melnyk noted. He noted that “new, real impulses for diplomacy” are needed from the outside.
He added that “the world needs to find an approach to the Russian leadership.” The diplomat emphasized that “there is no need to invite him (Putin – ed.) right now to Germany or fly to Moscow yourself,” but meetings are possible in third countries, for example in Iceland.
Melnyk also noted that no one in Ukraine wants to fight to the last soldier, but this is about preserving statehood, and Kyiv’s allies should realize the need for more support. Melnyk also recalled the 2015 Minsk agreements, noting that the initiative gave Ukraine seven years to “become stronger” before the start of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Previously, Melnyk, who was Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany from 2015 to 2022, called Scholz “an offended liverwurst.” This is how he commented on the chancellor’s words that his trip to Kyiv was hampered by the refusal of the Ukrainian authorities to receive German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
