Little penguins become aggressive in places where they are disturbed by humans, according to zoologists in an article published in the journal Animal Behavior. The research was carried out by zoologists from Flinders University (Australia). He studied the behavior of 43 little penguins in different Australian regions. 8 penguins lived on the popular tourist destination Granite Island, 20 – on Trubridge Island, 15 – on the Kangaroo Islands.
The exercise simulated the invasion of the penguin nests while they were inside. Some penguins just became alert. Others were angry, hissed at strangers and pecked at them. Based on this behavior, each penguin was rated on a “scale of aggressiveness”. And it turned out that most of all the penguins rage in those areas where they are actively disturbed by people.
Scientists write that the increased aggressiveness of penguins living in such conditions has been repeatedly reproduced in experiments, and a similar reaction to humans is stable for this species. The conclusion of the article is simple: restrict human access to the penguin colony during breeding.
