Psychologist explains why cheese lovers are prone to nightmares

If you eat cheese before bed, you will have nightmares. It turns out that this is not a product of a collective fantasy, but a fact recorded by scientists, albeit unexpected, reports Championat Lifestyle. The publication emphasizes that sometimes even a piece of a product loved by many is enough.

Since the beginning of the XXI century, such, for example, cases of “cheese syndrome” have become widely known: one of the sleepers dreamed of a sad vegetarian crocodile, and the other – a horizontally moving elevator. However, in works of art, the surrealistic phenomenon was mentioned long before the early 2000s – for example, in one of Charles Dickens’s books, a hero who dined on cheese complained of disturbing dreams.

As the Muscovite Alexander Beloborodov, PhD in Psychology, explains, this is because the cheese “contains a lot of tyramine (Greek. tyros means “cheese” – Rosbalt) Is a rather dangerous substance that has a very strong stimulating effect on the nervous system. ” In large quantities, he said, this biogenic amine “can cause nightmares, shallow, intermittent sleep.”

More often, nightmares are dreamed of by people whose bodies lack a special enzyme that can break down tyramine, the psychologist added.

Doctors advise such patients not only to eat less cheese, but also to give preference to special varieties. Blue cheese and hard and aged varieties like cheddar and parmesan are banned for those prone to tyramine.

It is also better to refuse a glass of wine, to which cheese is traditionally served, due to the fact that there is enough tyramine in the very gift of the vine.

A phobia of cheese disorder has previously been reported. The syndrome is called “turrophobia”.
