Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the United Nations Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) should be disbanded, Reuters reports. According to Netanyahu, UNRWA is not the only organization that deals with Palestinian issues, but there are much more effective structures.
The UN agency was in close contact with Hamas and provided the radical structures with the necessary resources, the Israeli prime minister noted. At the same time, Netanyahu emphasized that Israel initially followed the creation of UNRWA with hope, because the country’s government recognizes the importance and need for assistance to Palestinian refugees. However, then the opinion about the structure of the UN changed.
However, the Israeli side does not abandon humanitarian actions and calls for looking for new ways of cooperation, the Prime Minister said.
Earlier it became known that employees of the UN Agency for Relief of Palestine Refugees took part in the Hamas invasion of Israel on October 7. Israeli intelligence services managed to catch them. In addition, journalists from The Wall Street Journal discovered a close connection between Hamas and 1,200 members of UNRWA. After this, the USA, Germany, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Estonia and a number of other states decided to stop funding the organization. UNRWA said that without economic subsidies the structure would not be able to exist.
