The cause of a large-scale failure of the Russian part of the Internet was imperfect software

The cause of the large-scale failure of the Russian part of the Internet, which occurred on January 30, was problems with updating the Domain Name System Security Key (DNSSEC), according to the Coordination Center for .ru and .рф domains. According to the center, a technical error occurred in the software.

The Internet Technical Center (TCI) and MSK-IX continue to work on troubleshooting. In this case, a check is carried out when the network is disconnected. According to preliminary data, the operation of the RuNet has been completely restored. However, experts believe that the DNSSEC system needs to be improved and modernized in order to avoid future overloads and failures.

Earlier, IT expert Philip Kulin spoke about the connection between the large-scale shutdown of the RuNet and the operation of the DNSSEC key.

DNSSEC is needed to keep website domain names secure. Any portal on the network has its own name and the corresponding site name. Thus, in order for the user to freely enter an electronic page, the DNSSEC protocol is needed.

Let us remind you that on the evening of January 30 it became known that the RuNet with the RU and RF domains had been disconnected. The work of most domestic websites and applications, including Sberbank, Yandex, Tinkoff, marketplaces and university portals, was paralyzed. Operators MTS and MegaFon, as well as provider Rostelecom, reported problems for users throughout Russia.
