Scientists have found that sharks can save humanity from covid

Proteins from the immune system of sharks, similar to antibodies, are able to prevent the infection of human cells with coronavirus and related viruses. The research was carried out by scientists at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, RIA Novosti reports.

They studied antibody-like proteins (VNARs) found in sharks’ immune systems. It turned out that these proteins can penetrate into those secluded places where human antibodies are not able to “crawl”. VNARs can take on unique geometric shapes, allowing them to recognize structures that human antibodies do not.

The scientists noted that VNAR has not yet been tested in humans and will not be available for treatment for covid anytime soon. But looking ahead, the proteins have not yet been tested in humans and will not be available to treat humans anytime soon, but they will help prepare for future coronavirus outbreaks, scientists say. A mix of several VNAR species could be used to maximize efficacy against mutating viruses.

According to the authors of the study, the new type of drug from shark material will be cheaper and easier to manufacture than human antibodies. Also, preparations based on shark proteins will be especially useful for people with weakened immune systems, whose body does not respond properly to vaccinations.
