Moldova’s Foreign Ministry refused to consider Russia a priority in foreign policy

The new head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, Mihai Popsoi, called the process of European integration an absolute priority for the country, and relations with Russia will be built taking into account the interests of Chisinau and the public opinion of citizens. According to Popsoi, the most important thing is to establish a dialogue with Romania, the USA and Ukraine, Kommersant reports.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration emphasized that building bilateral relations with Ukraine, the United States and Romania will have a positive impact on the country’s process of joining the European Union. According to Popshoy, the republic is now preparing to modernize its foreign policy. At the same time, the minister called relations with the Russian Federation “principled,” but the basis for their development is, first of all, the “independence and territorial unity” of Moldova.

Earlier, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova Nicu Popescu asked for his resignation due to family circumstances. The politician had to move with his family to France. Popescu was a supporter of the European integration of the republic. Under him, Moldova became a candidate for membership in the European Union.

On January 29, Popshoy took the oath as head of the Foreign Ministry. He was appointed to this position by President Maia Sandu. Popshoj also serves as vice-chairman of the liberal party in power, Action and Solidarity (PAS). PAS advocates Moldova’s accession to the EU and the reorientation of the republic’s foreign policy from Russia to Western countries.
