The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has made a decision in the case of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva. The athlete was disqualified for four years for violating anti-doping rules, the court decision says.
Valieva’s disqualification begins on December 25, 2021. On this day she passed a positive test. All her test results must be cancelled. However, the issue of deprivation of awards will be considered by the relevant sports organizations.
Valieva will be stripped of her gold medal for winning the team tournament at the Olympics. The Russian team will also be deprived of team gold.
Let us note that because of the Valieva case, the IOC did not present awards based on the results of the team tournament in Beijing, in which the Americans took second place, the Japanese took third, and the Canadians took fourth. Together with Valieva, gold in the Olympic team tournament was won by Mark Kondratyuk, Anastasia Mishina / Alexander Gallyamov and Victoria Sinitsina / Nikita Katsalapov.
We add that after a positive doping test, Valieva won the 2022 European Championships, where she set a world record in the short program; she also became second at the 2022 Russian Championships and third in 2023.
Let us remember that two years ago, during the Olympics in China, Valieva was suspected of using prohibited substances even before going to the competition. At the time, Kamila was only 15 years old and, according to the rules, she was a “protected person,” so the details of the case were not disclosed. Valieva does not admit guilt, and her defense claims that the trimetazidine found in her sample was used by the athlete’s grandfather after heart surgery. The drug entered Valieva’s body because she drank from the same mug as her grandfather, lawyers insist, Kommersant writes.
