Municipality of Quito conducts a census of sex workers in the historic center

It is expected to have a diagnosis of the situation of each woman. The information will serve to structure a relocation proposal.

As part of the measures of the recovery plan for the historic center of Quito, a census of sex workers who work in this area is carried out. The Municipality collects the data of around 254 women, from December 8 to the end of this month 21.

The census began as a result of meetings held between the Social Inclusion Secretariat, the Manuela Sáenz Zonal Administration, and the Security Secretariat with representatives of sex worker associations.

With the information that is collected, it is sought to have a diagnosis that identifies the reality of each woman. Likewise, the material will serve to structure a relocation alternative, the Municipality said in a statement.

Once this is concluded, for the first week of January 2022 it is expected to start a process of identification of the associations and sign an agreement to respect the assigned spaces and streets. Starting on January 17, a proposal for peaceful coexistence agreements will be prepared with each group.

In this way, the Cabildo wants to put order in the colonial quarter and promote actions that dignify working conditions in terms of safety, protection of their health and other benefits. (I)
