Israel was obliged to immediately take measures to prevent genocide in the Gaza Strip. This is stated in the decision of the International Court of Justice, which is considering the claim of South Africa filed against the Jewish state, writes CNN.
Israel, according to the text of the resolution, must prevent any actions that could be considered genocide, ensure that IDF troops do not commit acts of genocide, prevent and punish any public comments that could be considered incitement to genocide, and ensure that Gazans have access to humanitarian aid. help.
In addition, the court demanded that Israel prevent the destruction of evidence that could be used in the genocide case. Israel must submit a report on the implementation of these measures within a month after the court’s decision.
At the same time, the court did not demand a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as an interim measure, although South Africa, which filed the lawsuit, insisted on this. The court also called for the immediate release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
The court’s decision was supported by 15 judges out of 17, and the decisions on humanitarian assistance and punishment for incitement to genocide were supported by 16 judges against one. The adopted decision of the International Court is considered interim – for now we are talking only about interim measures in the case.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already called the decision a “vile attempt” to deny Israel the right to self-defense and promised to continue the fight against Hamas.
Let us remember that South Africa filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice at the end of December 2023, demanding to suspend the military operation in the Gaza Strip, stop evicting Palestinians from their homes and prevent genocide. Let us note that until now the International Court of Justice has never found any specific state responsible for genocide.
