Putin: It is necessary to increase the economic opportunities of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting in the Northern capital on issues of further socio-economic development of the St. Petersburg agglomeration. As the press service of Smolny informed RosBalt news agency, the meeting was attended by Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov, Deputy Prime Ministers of the Russian Federation Marat Khusnullin, Alexander Novak and Tatyana Golikova, Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Northwestern Federal District Alexander Gutsan, presidential aides Maxim Oreshkin and Igor Levitin, Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Maxim Reshetnikov, Governor of the Leningrad Region Alexander Drozdenko, Chairman of the Board of Gazprom PJSC Alexey Miller, General Director – Chairman of the Board of JSC Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov, as well as heads of a number of federal ministries and departments.

The President noted that St. Petersburg is the most important historical, cultural and business center of the country. “Approximately 7.6 million people live in the Northern capital and the Leningrad region. Our key logistics hubs and seaports are located here, the largest scientific, technological and educational centers, production and industrial sites are successfully operating – both recently opened and legendary enterprises with a long history and strong traditions,” Vladimir Putin recalled.

The head of state emphasized that it is necessary to further increase the economic capabilities of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region. It is important to do this work comprehensively, based on long-term development plans for the entire agglomeration. Key tasks include strengthening priority industries: shipbuilding, pharmaceuticals, development of the service sector and creative industries, expansion of foreign trade infrastructure, including through the development of seaports and terminals. In general, this will increase the stability and diversification of the region’s economy, give impetus to the creation of well-paid jobs and increase the production of high-tech products and services, and create the basis for opening new companies.

In turn, Alexander Beglov thanked the president for his participation in the life of St. Petersburg. “Your support allowed the city to achieve high results in socio-economic development, continue the implementation of key projects that you supported, and adopt a new General Plan for St. Petersburg until 2040 with a perspective until 2050. We adjusted it taking into account the opinion of St. Petersburg residents, the tasks you set and the radical change in the geopolitical situation. While maintaining the industrial potential of the city, we increased the territory of industrial zones by 630 hectares,” the governor noted.
