US Senate Committee supports confiscation of Russian assets and transferring them to Ukraine

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Upper House of the American Congress supported the bill on the confiscation of Russian assets and their further transfer to Ukraine, TASS reports, citing the committee’s press service. Only one Republican senator, Representative Rand Paul of Kentucky, voted against it.

As follows from the text of the document, the confiscated assets, including frozen funds of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, are planned to be transferred to Kyiv as additional assistance. At the same time, the decision on their transfer must be made with the allies “as part of a coordinated multilateral effort.”

However, in order for the bill to enter into force, it must be approved at a meeting of the Senate and then the House of Representatives. If the document passes Congress, it will receive the status of law after being signed by the US President.

Note that only a small part of the frozen Russian assets is located in the United States, the rest are in Europe. At the same time, Washington’s decision may affect its allies, who have not yet found legal opportunities for their confiscation.

Earlier, commenting on these intentions of the West, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov emphasized that this topic is “unacceptable” for the Russian Federation, and the implementation of such plans “will be a very serious blow to the entire coordinate system” of the international financial system.” In addition, “such a step “will have legal consequences for those who initiated and implemented it.”
