FAS recognized Wildberries and Ozon as monopolists of the marketplace market

The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) recognized Wildberries and Ozon as monopolists in the marketplace market, TASS reports. According to the FAS, 80% of the market belongs to these two participants. The department emphasized that there is now a moratorium on inspections of companies operating in the IT field. However, according to the head of the FAS Maxim Shaskolsky, companies can and should stop violating the law on their own. At the moment, FAS intervention in such processes is prohibited by Resolution 448.

In December 2023, the FAS conducted an inspection of Russian marketplaces. During the monitoring, it turned out that competition in this sector is insufficient – Ozon and Wildberries together control about 80% of the market. At the same time, companies can correct the situation for the better and lead market processes to normalization, Shaskolsky believes.

The head of the FAS said that many representatives of small and medium-sized businesses often complain to the organization about the presence of monopolists in one or another market area, including in businesses that operate marketplaces. Shaskolsky cited as an example violations in the field of inflating logistics costs, strange conditions for using services, as well as the appearance of incomprehensible fines.

However, the FAS is confident that the work to correct the shortcomings will have a positive effect in the near future. The department will continue to eliminate monopolistic tendencies in the market.

In November last year, according to Rosstat, online sales increased by 13% compared to October. The leaders in this area are still Ozon and Wildberries.
