Russia is introducing a system for tracking expired goods in stores, the Kommersant newspaper reports. The innovation is designed to block the sale of food products that have expired. The system will work automatically and will be gradually implemented from April 1 of this year.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has been conducting an experiment with tracking spoiled food on shelves since 2023. According to representatives of the department, digital labeling of goods in order to control the expiration date is necessary to establish screening mechanisms. Officials plan to expand the experiment nationwide. This will improve the locking system and increase the quality of products on the shelves. The labeling system is planned to be integrated with other information databases for greater monitoring efficiency.
So far, the label is valid for 12 categories of goods, including water, dairy products and tobacco. In the future, the Ministry of Industry and Trade expects to expand this list.
In addition, a system of specialized codes has been introduced that will allow the data of market players to be verified with the information in permitting documents. This procedure is aimed at preventing low-quality goods from reaching store shelves. If the product has already gone on sale, then if violations are detected, it will be disposed of.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade wants to introduce a similar mechanism at the level of EAEU legislation in order to control the quality of goods imported to Russia. For now, the department is only calculating how exactly to organize such control in the interstate sphere.
